Sacred Mirrors: The Visionary Art of Alex Grey
Published in Paperback by Inner Traditions Intl Ltd (November, 1990)
Authors: Alex Grey, Ken Wilber, Carlo McCormick, and Alexander Grey
Average review score:

Beautifully realized..
I'll be the first to admit I had never heard of Alex Grey before. However, I am a fan of the music group Tool. The artwork on their new CD was done by Alex Grey. I never paid this much mind until I was in a book store a couple weeks ago and passed right by "Sacred Mirrors". I stopped, turned around, snatched it up and ran to the counter. Upon further reading I must say it is phenomenal..

The essays presented talk about Alex and his work. They provide an indepth look at his philosophies on transcendence. While enjoyable to read the real reason to buy the book is the art. I have never seen anything quite like Grey's work. It is bold and bright. His use of colors and their correspondence in the human body are simply amazing.

This book is definitely recommended for anyone who wants to view the human body; our physical, mental, and most importantly, our spiritual side, in a whole new light.

Expect a transcendent visionary experience
This book is a masterpiece. The artist, Alex Grey, has created visions of mystical spiritual beauty-- visions captured and inscribed on the pages of this book.

I don't know of any artist whose work is more frequently included in slides shows and books about mind body healing, consciousness and spirituality.

Just this week, Newsweek did a cover story on neurotheology-- the study of the neurology of spiritual experiences, and two of Alex Grey's works of art were prominently featured in the magazine.

Grey paints with the detail and precision of a medical illustrator-- but one on mescaline. The images are both beautiful and shimmering with energies-- the kind of energies which connect human souls and spirits together, which connect the whole universe together.

I met Alex Grey while attending the Omega Arts week. He was teaching a course on visionary art-- expressing the sacred visually. It is to his credit that he is a popular teacher of this unique approach-- expressing the visionary and spiritual through art. It's amazing to see the great work he inspires in his students too.

Once you see this book, you'll probably need to buy more copies-- as gifts. But first, start off by buying one for yourself as a real treat.

There are several sequences of art in here. Plans are under way for the primary sequence's original works to be assembled into a kind of "temple" or special building which will house them. Grey has designed the whole building. You can learn more about it under the web site which is spelled out by his name then dot com.

Not for everyone, just those with eyes in their souls
Alex Grey is quite probably the greatest artist alive today.

With that said, back to the book at hand. Sacred Mirrors is probably the book most people who want to get an idea of Grey's art should buy first. I find it slightly more accessible than Transfigurations, and it does not demand any knowledge of Grey's previous work. For those unfamiliar with his work, he paints almost all of the systems of the body in a transparent fashion, layered on top of each other. In his paintings you will see bones, nerves, blood vessels, chakras, and auras all at once. It can be overwhelming, but careful study of the paintings can make you see ordinary processes like kissing in a whole new way. And if you keep looking deeply at his paintings, things will keep revealing themselves. He also paints deities, from Avalokiteshvara to Jesus, with loving detail. This is definitely a great coffee-table book (and so much more!) for anyone interested in how transcendental theories of energy would manifest themselves visually. Grey's book also makes delightful entertainment for any kind of trip. Overall a sound buy for almost anyone who gets that feeling, sometimes, that there may be things going on in our physical reality that we just can't percieve. Grey can see them, and he has shared them with us.

A Walk on the Sidewalk
Published in Paperback by 1stBooks Library (January, 2003)
Author: David William McCormick
Average review score:

A great book
I Read the book as soon as it hit the shelves. I enjoyed the narrative and the contrast between his past and his future. McCormick had me feel as if I was a part of his infantry with all the attention to detail of the surroundings and his fellow soldiers. The book also had humor and sorrow to keep you interested. I'd love to see this book become a movie or documentary. I would recommend this to all who like, Band ofBrothers, Saving Private Ryan and any other well made War depictions.

Sidewalk
I've read many books on the struggles of war. This book is different in its portrayal of the inner struggles of the warrior. Excellent account by a decorated veteran.

A Journey of Self Discovery
McCormick's book is like a wonderful piece of folk art: unaffected, spontaneous, from the heart and compelling. Here is a Vietnam that we haven't seen before, a Vietnam seen from the eyes of a bewildered suburban young man scared by forces beyond his control and struggling with his own sexual identity. For those of us who lived through that horrific period of American history, it is a compelling reminder; for others, it is a very different slant on recent history.

Blue Night
Published in Paperback by Tyndale House Publishers (August, 2001)
Author: Cindy McCormick Martinusen
Average review score:

Couldn't put it down!
Set in Oregon, California, Venice and Austria, Cindy Martinusen's wonderful book, Blue Night, is a compelling, suspenseful read, the next in the Winter Passing trilogy.

I REALLY enjoyed this book. Kate Porter's plight as she attempts to put her life in some sort of meaningful order after the disappearance of her husband, Jack, was a heart-tugger. She was all that a heroine needed to be: tender, brave, frightened and adventureous. I loved coming alongside Kate, walking with her as she tried to find Jack and solve the mystery. Since I didn't want it to end, it made me happy that one more book in the trilogy was yet to come.

Be sure to consider Cindy's books when you are looking for a good read. They are terrific!

awesome
I thought this was a great book. I loved it and I would recomend it. I hate it when I'm reading and the book is totally predictable, but this book wasn't at all, and that's what kept me reading. I also liked how it has stuff in there about God.

Excellent Read!
I read the first book, Winter Passing, about a year ago. I picked this one up recently and didn't put it down until I was finished! I look forward to many more books from this author.

Daddy Will You Miss Me?
Published in Hardcover by The Watts Publishing Group (25 March, 1999)
Author: Wendy Mccormick
Average review score:

Perfect for daddies in the military
My husband is in the military and I found this book when we found out he was going to Kuwait for six months. The message is beautiful and my husband and I cried together while reading it. Since my daughter is only 9 mos. old we wanted a way for her to think of her Dad every day. Each night we look at his photo and read this book. It's a special way for me to let her know that her daddy loves her and that he's coming home soon. This book is perfect for any family in a similar situation.

Eases a child's fear
My son and I read this book almost every night when his daddy was traveling for weeks at a time. It was a very difficult time. I think that my son could relate to the little boy in the story on how much he missed his daddy. When a young boy is away from his father for a long period of time, he begins to wonder if his daddy still loves him and misses him. This book helps to ease those fears and that it is all going to be "ok". We are giving this book to two little boys that are my son's friends who are losing their daddy for 8 months while he fights this "War on Terrorism" with the Army in Egypt. We think that maybe this book will help them to come up with their own rituals while their daddy is gone and maybe help to ease their fears.

Wonderful Father's Day story. This is for all fathers.
This is the kind of thing that's going to be read on Father's Day for a long time. A sweet story of a boy and his father and how difficult their separation is when dad has to go on a trip. I loved it.

Mystery of the Roman Ransom
Published in Hardcover by Harcourt College Publishers (01 November, 2002)
Authors: Henry Winterfeld, Fritz Biermann, and Edith McCormick
Average review score:

Winterfled has done it again!
The detectives in toga are back! Ever read the first one? You should; this is a rare things: a sequal as good as the original.

This time, it's Caius that's in trouble (read the book to find out just how and why). It all started when the boys decided to buy their teacher a birthday present, and got him (they think) a deaf and dumb slave named Udo. That's just the start of their troubles, because Udo is more than he seems, and they suddenly find themselves in a web of intrigue and murder, when they stumble on a plot to assassinate a famous senator. It could be one of their fathers!

In this novel, we learn more about the boys, as they display their loyalty and courage. Caius, for one, isn't the same brawny wannabe Hercules he was in the last one, but shows his brave side.

It all takes the same wit, hair breath'd escapes, razor-sharp logic and good sense and you have yourself another wonderful novel!

A great book
The Mystery of the Roman Ransom was one of the best books I have ever read. One of the reasons it was so good was that it had a huge amount of mystery and suspense. It was also very good because it got you interested in the story right away. I also found the story engaging because the main characters were about my age. The main characters are seven rich Roman boys and their tutor Xanthos. In the beginning of the book, which is set in ancient Rome, the boys give Xanthos a slave for his 50th birthday, but he is very angry, so the boys must keep the slave. Through him they find out that one of their fathers is going to be murdered. Their fathers are very important senators who run the government. The plot of the book is trying to find and prevent the assassin(s) from killing Cacius's father. The boys' very realistic adventure in ships, houses and through alleys of Rome help them gain courage. The boys are very clever because they have to figure out who is going to murder Cacius's father. Their bravery helped them get through every dangerous task set before them. The only downside to this book is that there is hardly any historical information in it. It is a really great book.

It was a really good book one you would rarely find.
I liked it cause it was in depth. They told all about the characters then they told the story.

Popaganda: The Art and Subversion of Ron English
Published in Paperback by Soft Skull Pr (December, 2003)
Authors: Ron English, Carlo McCormack, Colin Moynihan, and Carlo McCormick
Average review score:

English speaks my language
This glossy, colorful book collects Ron English's great works and accomplishments, spanning his 20 years of using and twisting pop art to subvert itself, popular culture, and commercialistic overkill. Although a painter, street artist, and musician, English is best known for his hilarious - and sometimes dangerous - billboard work, whereby he would covertly paint over hundreds of billboards to convey an ironic, social point, sometimes done so well that the original doesn't appear altered. One of his thoughtful pranks was to paint a close-up of Charles Manson in the style of Mac's "Think Different" ads, to point out Mac's tasteless use of geniuses and great humanitarians to sell their products. Big Tobacco is another common victim of English's talent and wit, and his Joe Camel spoofs are more effective and affective than any government-funded anti-tobacco advertisement.

Ron English's work successfully addresses the Disneyification of America, the blatant commercialism of pop art, the uncontested corporate (and irresponsible) intrusion into people's lives, and the nonstop barrage of advertising that forces itself upon us everywhere we turn. His works throw a stick into the cogs, jamming popular culture for just a moment, so that for the split second you take in his work, you can actually "think different."

WHAT A PICTURE
A VISUAL EXTRAVAGANZA.I COULDN'T BELEIVE HOW MANY WAYS RON ENGLISH CAN SCREW WITH YOUR HEAD. A GREAT BOOK

A golden opportunity!!
Ron English is masterfully twisted. I own four original pieces of his work which are the gems of my art collection. His work reminds me of Salvadore Dali's work with more raw talent added. You will enjoy this book.

The Art of Mark Ryden: Anima Mundi
Published in Hardcover by Last Gasp of San Francisco (22 October, 2001)
Authors: Mark Ryden, Carlo McCormick, and Carlo McCormack
Average review score:

Ryden makes my head spin and the world turn
This is the book so many Ryden fans have been wishing for! Perhaps it my affection for big-headed children or otherworldy pink skies that makes Ryden's work so wonderful to behold. His art transports me back to my childhood that was filled with smiling rubber animals, Barbies and the Colonel's chicken. I can't walk through the meat department of Safeway without thinking of Mark Ryden and grinning to myself. Even his monsters, mutants and oversized insects are as benign and charming as his portraits of Lincoln. It is a magical yet vaguely disturbing world Mark Ryden brings to life, full of bees, bunnies, his son Jasper and a dog named Jesus.

Mark Ryden's work has appeared on the covers of Communication Arts, Juxtapoz art magazine and Rolling Stone. His art is currently on display at the Earl McGrath Gallery in NYC. ...

Anima Mundi by Mark Ryden
Beautifully produced full color book covering Mark Ryden's illustration and painting career. Cover title design printed in gold foil. Published in 2001, this book was limited to an edition of just 10,000 copies and is already out-of-print and a collector's item on the secondary market. Word has it that book distributors had sold out of this in just 1 month. This item is not to be missed by Mark Ryden fans and collectors.

Even scarcer than Anima Mundi was the release of the book BUNNIES AND BEES published in December of 2001 to coincide with the exhibit of the same name. This was published in a beautiful large format, 9 x 12, 50 pages, and contains Mark Ryden's work done after Anima Mundi making it an essential Ryden item. This was limited to just 8,000 copies. The paintings in this book are perhaps the best yet from Mark Ryden.

For the Ryden art collector, there's also the limited edition boxed set of the Anima Mundi book. Limited to just 500 sets, this contains the Anima Mundi book signed and numbered by Mark Ryden on a special limitation page not found in the normal edition; a signed and numbered giclee print titled "Sick Girl" which is reproduced in the book; an Anima Mundi bookmark, all packaged in a beautiful fabric box.

Eye Candy
Mark Ryden is one of the most magnificent painters I have ever had the pleasure to experience. This book is a collection of his best work, and I will treasure it for a long time. If you want to be taken to a place full of wonder, inspiration, and originality, this book is great. Too bad it is now out of print.

Spices of the World Cookbook
Published in Paperback by McGraw-Hill (May, 1984)
Authors: McCormick, Co., and McCormick & Co
Average review score:

No More bland recipes
This book was given to me in paperback, and I literally wore the pages out of it's binder. I love "Southern Living" and "Junior Leage" type cookbooks, but this book by far gives more recipes that are unsolicited requests from friends who have tried it's secrets. These dishes are "different" and extremely "tasty". Not Bland! Try it's Poultry and vegetable sections for dishes that are uncommon and full of flavor. The only room for improvement this book has, is that it needs photo's to help entise it's readers.

If you can read, you'll be a gourmet chef with this one!
As a bride, this one saved my cooking life 30 years ago! Easy to read, great introduction into the use of spices and seasonings, and the results were and still are always superb. If only the publisher had had the binding made as well as the contents. Mine, too, is falling apart but is, apparently, irreplaceable. I'll never give it up!

Duct Tape and an Elastic band
This book is outstanding. My dad has used it every night for as long as I can remember. I am here today to try and replace it with a newer maybe more modern version, for ours is a bit lets say, "weathered". The spine has been taped three times. Right now it is being held together with an elastic band. The pages are torn and yellow and smell of oregano and allspice. I am trying to acquire another one for father's day, sadly it is out of print. I hope it's replacement has not changed since 1984. I recommend this book (if you can get your hands on one) to every cuisiniere. Wish me luck.

How to Grow Medical Marijuana
Published in Paperback by Prelude Pr (December, 1999)
Authors: Todd McCormick and Peter McWilliams
Average review score:

I love to Smoke Pot
OK this is how it f ucking goes I smoke pot and I dont ever pass the blunt until I pass out

Very groundbreaking and tragic
It's sad to see medical marijuana users persecuted by the federal government. Todd McCormick is facing a 5-year minimum sentence for growing his medicine at home, as well as doing some medical-marijuana research.

The actual information relayed in the book is thorough. Instructions run from A to Z, covering all the steps in harvesting and maintaining a marijuana crop.

Actually, I'm not sure that the methods implied by McCormick to grow 'Mary' as medicine are the same ones coveted by recreational pot smokers. There may be a different variety of marijuana more specialized for intoxication. One of the goals of medical marijuana is to get full therapeutic benefits with minimal psychoactivity, not exactly the goal of stoners. Therefore I would recommend this primarily to those who plan to actually use marijuana as a medicine as opposed to a recreation.

Very good marijuana cultivation book.
Do not be fooled by the title my friends, medical marijuana is exactly the same as recreational marijuana so don't be discouraged to buy because of the title. Todd McCormick tells you step by step how to grow some kind buds, very simple- I also purchused (before this book) Closet Cultivator which is solely based on cultivation and I found that Todd's book was far more helpfull! This is a MUST HAVE! TRUST ME! Yes, I am high but I always am so.....Peace

Ryan
